Covid19 Outbreak in Indonesia
Been a tight week. Worrying about my health, how the world is coping with Coronavirus, how Indonesia government coping within Covid19 first phase here. I've been debating myself, thinking "have I made the right decision" or sometimes questioning myself "did I just make a brave move or a stupid one". I'm in doubt, to just keep doing my research in lab or just go home to make sure my family is safe and sound.
Anyway, yes the virus just began its outbreak here in Indonesia. Until this article was made (6.00 AM, 21st March), there were 369 positive cases of Covid19 with 35 deaths. I'm still mourning to see the death toll to reach that high, which left us with Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 8.67%, is the highest in the world. I'm terrified to know that the numbers might go higher per days, the only way to lower the CFR is to keep testing to find new cases. Well, it is not that simple because eventually new cases (lots of them) will lead to bigger problem. Fasilities issues.
Ever since the outbreak happened last January in China, to see the number of cases keep increasing exponentially, I was thinking to myself this could be spreading worldwide including to my hometown. To see such things happened in countries well-equipped with modern tech in hospital and what not, how can I not worry about my country. Will Indonesia's health system able to handle it once it spring here?
To put it simply, Indonesia is not as advance incorporating tech in medical areas. We're short in testing devices. We might be needing more healthcare workers because Indonesia is one of the most populated country and there is possibility the cases reach higher number than the workers can handle. While if we're short in healthcare workers, it means the available ones have to extend their working time which will risk their own health. May Allah bless all healthcare workers around the world for standing soo bravely saving lives. My prayer goes with you❤
I'm not someone who work in medical areas but since January I've been following this issue. From what I know Covid19 can cause mild breathing difficulties until Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrom (ARDS), we might need extra ventilators (device to help patient having difficulties of breathing) and so is other medical devices needed to treat patients. And I know, when it comes to supply extra things, it might take times and cost a load.
In early revealed cases, things get a little bit chaotic, people started panic buying. The "able-to-afford" start piling up their lifestock leaving the "unable-to-afford" worrying their tomorrow. My opinion on this, the government failed to deliver the important point and we're left with too little information. So, the panic buying basically is a form of wanting to save their live by stacking up things they might need to survive this pandemy, like mask, alchohol, hand sanitizer, foods, and healthcare products. The 3 things I mentioned earlier, up until now are still hard to find anywhere. Stores are putting sign that those things are out of stock.
While there is me. The day when they officially annouced Indonesia has 2 positive cases, I was terrified but I managed to stay calm and not even thinking to buy everything once. If that day was the first time I heard about Corona Virus (which honestly sounds terrifying), most possibly I'm among those who panic buying. Since I've read articles of this pandemy before, I think I'm more familiar with the case. It's like I get the important point that most people seemed to miss, it is to stay as fit as possible. It includes minding your basic hygiene, eating healthily, getting enough sleep, do some sport, ALSO managing stress. In other word stressing over this Covid19 will just weaken your immune system.
Covid19 is a self limiting disease, which means keeping your immune system in a great condition will increase your survival rate. Yes, everyone is vulnerable to catch this virus. But, people with good immune system have higher chance to survive this virus, that's why it is called survival rate.
From what I know the virus is replicating themselves inside our cells. To finally giving off symptoms, lets say it acquires 10 replicants (just a random number). If our immune system is in good condition, the virus won't be able to reach that number. The virus that stays in our body might not showing symptom but the bad news, it is possible for us to pass it to other. Thats when Social Distancing is needed to help lowering the possibility of passing it to others.
The basic thing about Social Distancing is to treat ourselves as if we're said positive. Safest option is to stay home for 14 days because the incubation time needed for the virus giving off symptom is maximum in 14 days. If in those time you're seeing mild symptom, you have to carry on with the self quarantine. If the symptom is getting severe, you might need to call a doctor to get test. Before you worry too much please educate yourself on what the symptoms looks like. You can easily look it up in google, remember to choose a legit source. If you still have to go out, please do constantly remind yourself to keep a safe distance (1 meter) from another human being.
Indonesia government has appeal through a social distancing campaign called #dirumahaja meaning to stay at home. It consist of 3 main appeal; work from home (further being short WFH), study from home, and pray from home. Work from home has been implemented by several companies, but a lot still have no choice and still going to work. Some company are freeing time to start work so their worker can avoid mass in public transportation or traffic. School are being closed, exams are being postponed. Honestly, we're quite lucky because most thing can be done by online now. University are helding online classes, so is students doing online research, uploading pictures of their homework to teacher, etc. Other than that, I see a drastic different on get together praying in public prayer room. This week I saw some mosque are closed, while some only equip with limited prayer things (mat, mukenah, etc).
All of the above are still going until now, but some street stayed being crowded.
There are people who have no option but to still going in street, going to work. Online driver (Uber, Grab, etc), a community that is vulnerable catching the virus because they have to pick up different people everyday not knowing whether they're totally healthy or might be the carrier of the virus. This week, I tried to talk to all the driver that drove me to campus or went going home. I tried to give them simple explanation of the disease, why is it dangerous, and recommend them using mask for precaution step.
While there is a couple group of people sounding to just quarantine (lockdown), Indonesia's president, Jokowi, has said it clearly that government has not seen quarantine as an option. Achmad Yurianto with pop name Yuri, health ministry spokesman, also said the same. Instead the government is planning to do a massive test, it was said that the testing kit is being imported now. Yes this could help lowering the spreading rate, but it surely will follow with new problem.
I'm optimistic we'll find a way to get thru this crisis together, but my concern is, how long will it takes to get thru this? China, with all its modern tech and government fast responses, able to get thru the peak of the disease in 3 months, leaving them with CFR around 2%. Finger crossed for Indonesia.
Btw, lets not forget the fact that China tried to hide this Coronavirus outbreak in their early cases, but mostly good job for doing such hard work to handle this crisis. Honestly, it could save so many lives.
The least I can do as an individual is to keep treating myself as if I was said positive while still maintaining healthy lifestyle. Consume multivitamin if needed to boost my immune system. The elders and people with some kind of illness record are at risk. If you know someone within that community still not understand the danger or this disease, please try to notice them. Mindful of not touching any random surface including face area when outside. Always wash hand whenever you can or use the hand sanitizer, altho all along it left my hand so dry! But if it can help me to maintain my health so it'll affect the possibility of this virus to transfer to other, then it's a must to do. We should all do this together.
